Maxi |
Maxi, a young Huni Kuin woman adorned with the traditional feather ornament, cocar. During the late 19th century and well into the 20th century, the Huni Kuin tribe was forced into slave labor by colonizers and compelled to work on rubber plantations in the region. During this period, they were forced to live on the plantations and prohibited from practicing their own culture, wearing their
traditional clothing and jewelry. They were also forbidden from speaking their own language, practicing their sacred rituals, and many traditions were lost. The tribe reclaimed their cultural identity in the late 20th century and has fought hard to achieve this.
